Overview

What Is a Neuroma?

A neuroma is a thickening or enlargement of nerve tissue that develops when a nerve becomes irritated, compressed, or injured. This abnormal growth can cause sharp pain, burning sensations, numbness, or tingling along the path of the affected nerve. Neuromas most commonly occur in areas where nerves are exposed to repetitive pressure or friction, such as the feet, hands, or near surgical scars.

One of the most well-known types is Morton’s neuroma, which affects the nerve between the toes, but neuromas can develop in many parts of the body. According to the Cleveland Clinic, neuromas occur when nerve tissue becomes inflamed and thickened, often due to repetitive stress or compression.

Understanding Neuromas

Nerves act as communication pathways between the brain, spinal cord, and the rest of the body, transmitting signals related to sensation, movement, and pain. When a nerve becomes repeatedly irritated or damaged, the surrounding tissue can thicken as part of the body’s attempt to repair the injury. Unfortunately, this thickened nerve tissue can itself become a source of chronic pain.

Patients with neuromas often describe symptoms such as burning pain, electric shock sensations, tingling, numbness, or increased sensitivity in the affected area. In some cases, pressure on the nerve may cause radiating pain or weakness in nearby muscles. If left untreated, neuromas can continue to worsen, leading to persistent nerve irritation and reduced function in the affected area.

Triggers

Neuromas typically develop when a nerve experiences repeated mechanical stress, compression, or injury. Over time, this irritation can cause inflammation and thickening of the nerve tissue.

Common triggers include repetitive motion, poorly fitting footwear, scar tissue following surgery or injury, joint instability, and structural abnormalities that place pressure on nearby nerves. Certain occupations or athletic activities that involve repetitive loading or compression of nerves can also increase the risk of neuroma formation.

Differential Diagnosis

Because neuromas affect nerve tissue, their symptoms can sometimes resemble other nerve-related conditions. These may include peripheral neuropathy, nerve entrapment syndromes, radiculopathy originating from the spine, tendinitis, or joint arthritis.

At Compass Pain and Wellness, precise diagnosis is the foundation of effective treatment. Our physicians use advanced diagnostic tools including structure-specific diagnostic ultrasound exams, MRI imaging, nerve conduction velocity testing, and targeted diagnostic injections to determine exactly which nerve is responsible for a patient’s symptoms. By carefully evaluating the nerve and surrounding structures, we can identify whether pain is caused by a neuroma, nerve compression, or another underlying condition and develop a personalized treatment plan.

Solutions

At Compass Pain and Wellness, treating neuromas involves reducing nerve irritation, relieving compression, and supporting the healing of surrounding tissues. Because nerve pain can significantly affect quality of life, our treatment approach focuses on both immediate symptom relief and long-term restoration of healthy nerve function.

Our physicians combine advanced regenerative medicine, precision-guided procedures, and rehabilitative therapies to address the structural causes of nerve irritation.
