UNDERSTANDING THE SCIENCE
What Is a Cervical Epidural Steroid Injection?
TREATMENT AREAS
What Symptoms and Conditions Does It Treat?
Common Symptoms
- Neck pain radiating into the shoulder, arm, or hand
- Tingling, burning, or numbness
- Muscle weakness in the arm or hand
Underlying Conditions
- Herniated or bulging cervical discs
- Cervical degenerative disc disease
- Cervical spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)
- Cervical spondylosis (arthritis in the neck)
the process
How Does It Work?
Cervical epidural injections reduce pain through two main mechanisms:
Anti-Inflammatory Effect:
- The corticosteroid decreases inflammation around the nerve root.
- It suppresses inflammatory chemicals and reduces nerve irritation.
Nerve Signal Modulation:
- A local anesthetic may also be included to block pain signals temporarily.
- This provides immediate relief while the steroid’s effects develop over several days.

- Performed under fluoroscopic (X-ray) or CT guidance
- Contrast dye confirms accurate placement
- The injection precisely targets the affected nerve region
At Compass Pain and Wellness, every procedure is performed with meticulous care to maximize safety, comfort, and effectiveness.
IDEAL CANDIDATES
Who Is a Good Candidate?
A cervical epidural steroid injection may be appropriate if you have:
- Persistent neck or arm pain from a pinched nerve
- Confirmed imaging findings (e.g., MRI or CT showing nerve compression)
- Symptoms not relieved by conservative care such as:
- Physical therapy
- Anti-inflammatory medications
- Activity modification
Not recommended if:
- You have an active infection near the injection site
- You’re on blood thinners that can’t be temporarily paused
- You have unstable spine anatomy or severe neurological changes
Our team carefully screens each patient to ensure safety and to design a personalized treatment plan aligned with your health goals.

THE PROCESS
What to Expect on Procedure Day
At Compass Pain and Wellness, your comfort and safety come first. Here’s what to expect:
Pre-Procedure Review:
- Our friendly team reviews your history and any pre-procedure instructions.
- You’ll be positioned comfortably, usually lying face down.
Anesthesia & Guidance:
- Local anesthetic numbs the injection area.
- Using fluoroscopic X-ray guidance, the physician carefully advances a fine needle into the epidural space.
Injection:
- Contrast dye confirms placement.
- The steroid (and anesthetic, if used) is administered precisely at the targeted level.
Observation & Discharge:
- You’ll rest briefly in our recovery area.
- Most patients return home the same day with post-procedure instructions.
The procedure typically takes 15–30 minutes including setup and recovery.
Typical Recovery Experience:
- Mild soreness or numbness for a few hours is normal.
- Avoid strenuous activity or heavy lifting for 24 hours.
- Apply ice for comfort as needed.
Next Few Days:
- Some patients feel temporary pain “flare-up” before improvement begins.
- Relief generally develops within 2–5 days as the steroid takes effect.

Our care team will provide personalized post-procedure instructions for your recovery.
A key advantage to receiving care at Compass is that your physician can coordinate directly with our in-house physical therapist to provide the best rehabilitation plan for you. In addition, we may provide red-light therapy, PEMF, or other auxiliary modalities to improve your recovery and the effectiveness of the procedure.
Together, these will help maximize your recovery and mobility.
